Men Suicides: Death by injustice, not a misplaced sympathy?

By S R Ranjan
:  Should a Nation having around 51% men with secured Justice, Equality, Liberty assured of dignity, fundamental rights by Constitution deny justice as equality, equal law, gender-neutral legal process, rule of law, law enforcement safeguards to Men? Reportedly, a recent NCRB data show a change in the characteristic pattern of suicide deaths. According the data, across the country, a man commits suicide every 4.45 minutes while a woman every 9 minutes. It further shows that the rate of committing suicide among married men is three times that of married women? There’s now a nation-wide cry “why no laws for men” and #MenToo!

Suicide is neither an “individual case” nor a “personal choice”. When all the doors of life are closed, it is the only door left open to walk through, as the last resort, to discard a life of ‘hopelessness’, ‘helplessness’ and ‘injustice’. Everyone is born to live a life. It can never a be choice of a ‘living’ human being until and unless he/she is pushed to brink of the life, beyond the threshold limit of his/her capacity to endure the pain, torture and injustice in life or to coup up with life. “Politicians don’t talk, they have made a women ‘Vote Bank’. There is a rat race for women appeasement. They don’t have guts to talk for men. An environment of fear has been made. 498A is an extortion industry of crores and it involves all, police, courts...bottom to top. Most of the women complaints and FIRs are scripted and copy paste...when I go to police station for men, they say a dialogue marne do saalo ko...marriage alimony is a business, when any relationship gets sour why pay money, why burden husband...in women issues there is unity but in the case of men there’s no unity because of the money,” says Barkha Trehan, an activist, in an interview with Puneet Arora, @SocialEyeZ (YouTube). >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTmg1UtbBzY

In fact, is there any law enforcement public commission like ‘National commission for Men’ for Men to address their grievances and complaints; the police machinery deny any law or legal protection to men; over years of denial as equal citizens, the parliament hasn’t made any specific law for men’s safety or welfare; on the contrary there has been a rampant and growing misuse of laws and false cases – rape, dowry, domestic violence, cruelty case, 498A, POCSO, etc – are being mechanically, inadvertently filed against men, which are reportedly proven to be false, fake in most cases, reportedly over 95% of the cases? The Hon’ble Supreme Court in a recent matrimonial dispute case underscored that Hindu marriage is considered to be a sacred institution as a foundation for a family not a “commercial venture” and the laws enacted for the welfare of women should not be misused as instruments of harassment, intimidation or extortion against their husbands. In an August 2023 legal case, the Calcutta High Court, while quashing complaints filed by a wife against her husband and in-laws, observed that women are engaging in “legal terrorism” by “misusing” Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code.

The travesty of justice is that in most such false cases there is no legal counter-action, deterrent or lawful punishment done or made resulting in such cases being used as means to settle a score, for undue money ‘demands’, ‘extortion’, official or unofficial ‘settlements’ at the law enforcements or police machinery like the Crime Against Women (CAW) Cell, police stations, even in Courts’ Mediation Centres across India? Unfortunately, are such false cases being given undue advantage, favor, support against men without reasonable grounds, merit of cases, substantial proofs? Such denial of equal justice and continued injustice for years has led to cruelty against men and increasing number of suicide cases among men.

The NCRB data indicates that today there is a ‘new pattern’ in suicide deaths and men are becoming the more vulnerable gender and depressing people who succumb to social, family and personal pressure? In one such a tragic suicide case that led to clamour around India, a man from Bengaluru – Atul Subhash – killed himself in December 2024, leaving behind a detailed 24-page suicide note and an 81-minute video in which he blamed the trouble in his marriage and divorce proceedings.“I hold the Judiciary, the girl and her family, responsible for the Atul Subhash suicide case...no law says that inside the court you make a difference between woman and man…when such a situation is there in courts and there is a fear in a client that his lawyer may mix or the hon’ble judge is compromised…then how will you get justice….in the name of justice system such a fun/joke is being made with our society which has no parallel…in reality there is no justice system...we have just made a court system which we got from the British colonial time….,” said Justice (retd.) and former Delhi High Court judge Shiv Narayan Dhingra in a ‘The Ekam Nyaay Show’ interview with Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj (YouTube). >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOPqbf2bB9U

In a PIL case seeking direction to frame guidelines to deal with suicide by married men and set up of a 'National Commission for Men' to safeguard their interests, the Hon’ble Supreme Court refused to entertain the PIL  "No question of misplaced sympathy for anyone. You just want to portray a one-sided picture. The issue of suicide may seem to have been “portrayed as a one-sided picture”, but a factual data presented by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) about increasing suicides case among men and women is a matter of grave concern for all us as no one detached from one another and connected to same family or the society we live in. The petition had also sought directions to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to deal with the issue of suicide by married men and accept the complaints of men suffering domestic violence.

Denial of equality before law and justice to men with equal protect of the laws may seem to be a paradox for gender justice and may have implicit or explicit institutional support, justice system’s misplace or misused rule of the law and equivocal protection from those who do not believe in ‘justice as equality’ and manifest ‘injustice of inequality’ in the due process of law. Gender-equality seems to have become an empowerment for gender-injustice against men and is being enforced like a vicious movement and campaign to target the other gender by misuse of institutional frameworks, system, legal process and the rule of law.

The rhetoric of patriarchy, feminism, misogyny may have had a cause and purpose, but have lost the truth, because the data speaks out loud that life is pinning down men.
